Technical Privacy Glossary

Cookie: A small piece of information that a server stores on the user's computer. This file can store your preferences and/or actions for the particular web site.
IP address: A series of four numbers (between 0-255) that uniquely identify your computer on the Internet. Example: 111.123.145.1. ISPs can (and do) track the IP addresses used by their customers.
Remailer: A specialized server that sends email anonymously, acting like a "proxy".
Proxy: A proxy is an Internet server that allows you to use its resources to fetch web pages from web sites, functioning as an intermediary. The websites being viewed see the proxy server as the requester, not the person browsing.
Encryption: Algorithms using cryptography to convert plaintext into ciphertext (encrypted message) in order to prevent anyone but the intended recipient from reading the message.
