The word "proxy" can be defined as acting on behalf of someone else; an agent or substitute. Proxy servers do this very thing for Internet users who would like
to increase their privacy while surfing the web. There are two types of proxy system - web based and browser based. Web based anonymous privacy systems let you access the
proxy website and surf through it. That is, the proxy website runs a script that you surf through - so the visiting websites only see the traffic as originating from the
proxy website and not you. The second type of proxies - browser based - are based on the fact that web browsers allow you to include proxy servers (usually for HTTP, FTP,
SSL, Gopher and SOCKS) in their connection settings. Here you add in the ip address and port numbers of the proxy server and once again surf the Internet with the proxy
server acting as an intermediary - fetching the content on your behalf. Such proxy servers can range in privacy and some are only used to "caching" purposes to increase
speed.
